Heart Wellness Centre Victoria Director, Professor Peter Barlis.

 

Professor Barlis is a key opinion leader locally, nationally and internationally. With a significant academic output in new innovations to tackle cardiovascular disease, he seeks to provide the latest health information for his patients in a kind and compassionate manner. 

 

Peter sees patients with all types of conditions affecting the heart. Peter is a pioneer in interventional cardiology, the specialised field of cardiology dealing with the treatment of blockages in the arteries and stents. In 2009 he introduced a new imaging technique into Australia. having previously completed fellowships at the prestigious National Heart & Lung Institute, Royal Brompton Hospital London and the Thoraxcentre, the Netherlands. This method, called optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses laser light to scan inside the arteries of the heart and spot areas of disease, cholesterol plaques and is the best method to assess stents in the arteries. Peter leads national and international clinical trials and continues to attract considerable funding to head the cardiovascular innovations research team at the University of Melbourne. 

He has published more than 130 peer reviewed journal articles, is the editor / author of more than 5 textbooks and frequently features in the media discussing new developments in the treatment of heart disease. Peter is also actively involved in community and public health including being a Board Director of the Mental Health Foundation Australia (https://www.mhfa.org.au) and the East Timor Heart Fund (https://easttimorheartsfund.org.au) and Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.​ in 2020, Peter was appointed by the Hon. Greg Hunt MP, Minister for Health as a Panel Member of the Australian Government Department of Health Professional Services Review (www.psr.gov.au).

Dr Mary Mashicharan

Dr Mary Mashicharan MBBS, MRCP (UK), FRACP

 

Mary is a Consultant Cardiologist specialising in general cardiology and cardiac imaging. Following completion of medical qualifications, Mary was awarded the Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2017. Her Advanced Cardiology training was completed at the Canberra Hospital followed by the Austin Hospital, Victoria where she also undertook formal training in echocardiography (heart ultrasound) as an Imaging Fellow.

 

Between 2017-18, she went on to complete further cardiac imaging fellowships at the prestigious Wessex Cardiothoracic Centre in Southampton UK, followed by further specialist clinical and imaging training at the Glenfield Hospital Cardiology Service, Leicester, UK.

Mary sees patients with all aspects of heart issues with a focus on preventative strategies to enhance heart health and overall well-being. She also undertakes exercise stress echo testing, used to assess the heart's blood flow and rule out any significant blockages of the arteries.
